Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day) is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each 18 July (on Mandela's birthday). The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010. However, other groups began celebrating Mandela Day on 18 July 2009.
Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact.
The Mandela Day campaign message is: "Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We’re asking you to start with 67 minutes."
Nelson Mandela Day has been initiated by Nelson Mandela Foundation to foster the spirit of ubuntu which emphasises the need by all people of the world to selflessly dedicate 67 minutes of their time to implement projects for development and betterment of the lives of ordinary people, especially the needy.
The DFR group decided to make a difference in our own community and got involved with Operation Compassion on this day and made a difference. We served the elderly in the frail care unit with cake and shared a cup of coffee with them to brighten up their day.
We are also committing ourselves to provide them with a cooked meal once a month and also with donations of toys and clothing.
CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME. Literally; take a look around, declutter your house and donate the unwanted items or clothes to ’’Operation Compassion” who serves about 9 other needy communities with clothing and food on a regularly basis. They also serve Lofdal Care Facility for elderly people. You’ll not only be doing something good for others, but for yourself as well! Contact DFR offices at 012 546 7574 or go to www.lofdalsorgsentrum.co.za if you want to participate by donating clothes, toys or food.
